Tom Grubb (his nickname) was not particularly brilliant and would on occasion drink too much hard cider. Once during a revival at the Methodist Tabernacle he was asked to pray. Repeatedly in his prayer he would say, “Lord come and bless us”.
Apparently expecting some audible or visible answer to his prayer and none forthcoming he is supposed to have said, “Lord, is you comin’? Naw, you ain’t comin’, but if this has been Elkanah (Diggs 1844-1935) or John “Doctor” (Diggs 1815-1891) (2 prominent praying men in the community) you’d have been here long ago!”
